What Happened When Frank Died: The Song and Dance

Frank died.

Children sang.

Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes!

Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes!

Frank looked out across the plains of fire. An eternity of flesh danced back at him.

As the children sang, the scorched bodies of all the cursed souls followed along.

“Better keep up!” a voice beside him called over the tune.

Ears, and eyes, and mouth, and nose!

Frank turned to the voice. A big hairy man poked his own nose gently and smiled.

“You really should keep up” he said, grunting as he bent down to touch his toes. Frank tried to move, as soon as he did an agonizing pain shot through his head. He cried out. He grabbed his head and it stopped. A second later a searing pain shot through both shoulders.

“Told you,” said the big hairy man, taping his knees. “If you don’t keep up it will only get worse.”

Head, shoulders, knees and toes knees at toes!

Frank grabbed his head just as the pain began. It stopped immediately. As the song played the child in Frank took control did as he was told.

“What is this? What is going on?” he said, then, caught off guard, he felt a sharp stabbing pain in his eyes. He caught the rhythm and tapped his mouth, then nose.

The Big Hairy Man grinned, “This is hell my friend. But, you get used to it. As long as you keep up.”

Frank touched his head, then shoulders and looked around. Everyone seemed to be chatting pleasantly enough, but, always following along. Occasionally someone would cry out but, it seemed people caught on pretty fast.

One young man was managing to keep up as he tried to flirt with a group of young women. “Ah” he cried, touching his eyes instead of his ears. The girls laughed.

“So, where you from?” The Big Hairy Man said.

“Maine.”

“Lovely, spent some time up there myself,” The Big Hairy Man continued, bending over, grunting with the strain. “I’m Charlie by the way. I’d shake your hand but, as you can see,” Charlie said, grasping his knees.

Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes!

“I’m Frank. What is going on here?”

“I told you, this is hell.”

“How do you know?”

Charlie tried to shrug as he tapped his ears “Can’t imagine this is anyone’s idea of heaven.”

“How long have you been here?” Frank asked.

“A few years at least, or, who knows, eternity? A good while.”

“Have you ever tried to escape?” Frank asked.

Charlie laughed. “See how fast and far you can move and still keep up. Cause, if you don’t, you’ll end up a blubbering mess on the floor in unending agony, trust me, I’ve seen it.”

The idea of it didn’t appeal to Frank.

Eyes and ears and mouth and nose!

Head, shoulders, knees and toes knees and toes!

“Is everyone here?” Frank asked.

Charlie frowned at him. “That is a silly question. How would I know? Best you can do is just that, make the best of it. I’m writing a book, want to hear it?”

“I think I need to go.”

Charlie sighed. “Suit yourself, you won’t find them.”

“How do you know I’m looking for someone?”

“Cause, you wouldn’t go walking off in this if you weren’t.”

Frank nodded.

“Well, thanks.”

“No worries, good luck,” Charlie said

As the children sang out toes! Frank began to walk, then run, searching the faces of everyone he passed. He touched his body in time with the song as he went.

Toes!

Frank stumbled, the pain was unimaginable. He rolled and grabbed his head, his shoulders. He stood up and got knees and toes. He righted himself.  He took a deep breath.

Eyes and ears and mouth and nose!

Head, Shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes!

Frank ran.

  1. When I read your stuff, I’m like, We’re allowed to do that? Wow, whoa!!! Just say that such and such is true (well, with plenty of detail to make it real)??! My reaction to your work is sort of the same reaction I had to e.e. cummings work, how he uses lower-case, and is all over the page, i.e., and how do you like your blue boy now, Mister death (paraphrased).
Anyway, this is just to say you inspire me to finish my shit. lol TY! xx
